Campaign Summary

Calling on MPs to pledge transparency into funding and influence on Net Zero policies

Campaign Overview

After our launch in Parliament of our new “Clean” Air, Dirty Money, Filthy Politics report, will you please help us today by contacting your MP about a pledge of transparency on Net Zero?

Campaign Action Steps

Here’s what to do today, please:

Step 1: Open up a quick email to your MP

Go HERE to find your MP’s email address

Step 2: Use our template text below (or write your own) for the email

Note: be sure to include your postal address so your MP knows you are a constituent

I know you’ve had the new report from Together, ‘”Clean” Air, Dirty Money, Filthy Politics’ which shows how big money from a handful of billionaires is driving anti-car and associated Net Zero policies in the UK (link: https://togetherdeclaration.org/report).

Given what is revealed in the report, I understand other MPs are agreeing to a pledge which is very simple:

“The public must have transparency into funding and influence on Net Zero policies”

In an election year, if we don’t have democracy, we have nothing at all and I’d like to know if you’ll be signing that pledge as well, please?

Step 3: Post on social media

Use our text below – or write your own

Please tag your MP as well, if you can. For example, “Today I wrote to my MP @jeremycorbyn…”

Today I wrote to my MP asking if they’d pledge to give the public transparency into funding and influence on Net Zero policies

You can also download and share THIS GRAPHIC to go with your post, if you like.

Note: these tags work for Twitter, they may need adjusting for other social media platforms.

Step 4: After a week, please follow up with your MP, by email then phone

After a week, one of four things has probably happened:

(1) Your MP said “Yes! Where do I sign?”

(2) Your MP responded along lines of “Net Zero was in our manifesto”

(3) Your MP responded along lines of “we’re in a climate emergency” or similar

(4) Your MP hasn’t responded at all yet

HERE’S WHAT TO DO NOW, IN EACH CASE:

(1) Your MP said “Yes! Where do I sign?”

Great news! Please forward your MP’s positive response to us at mail@togetherdeclaration.org so we can organise for them to sign the pledge.

(2) Your MP responded along lines of “Net Zero was in our manifesto”

We suggest you reply to your MP along the lines of:

Thank you for your reply. Net Zero may have been snuck into the manifesto but it is very obvious that the fundamental and far-reaching consequences were never adequately explained to the public. As all major parties included it in their manifesto, the public was not given a choice – if one cannot vote against such a huge policy, consent cannot be assumed. Regardless of this, it is now very clear that a few “green” billionaires are dominating the public sphere with big money, and my question was would you sign a pledge to have this all made transparent, but the answer is “no?” What’s going on with democratic accountability?

(3) Your MP responded along lines of “we’re in a climate emergency” or similar

We suggest you reply to your MP along the lines of:

Thank you for your reply. If you aren’t willing to sign a pledge for transparency, the only conclusion I can draw is that you aren’t for democracy and accountability? That being the case, I feel I have no choice but to share this with others. There is no way I could vote for you on that basis and I am sure everyone I speak to in the constituency will feel the same.

(4) Your MP hasn’t responded at all yet

Just follow up with your MP – either resend your original email in full or forward it again to your MP, adding a “one liner” at the top such as “I haven’t heard from you yet on this extremely important question?”
